SIL 2 Functional Safety & Redundant Architectures

SIL 2 Safety Integrity Level

Safety Integrity Level 2 (SIL 2) is a performance target defined by IEC 61508 and IEC 62061 for functional safety systems. A SIL 2 rated control system must achieve a Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD) between 10⁻³ and 10⁻², meaning the safety function fails no more than once in every 1,000 demands on average.

Outsourced Controls builds SIL 2 capable panels using the Emerson PACSAFE safety I/O modules and PACSystems RX3i High Performance controllers. These panels are designed for applications where a control system failure could result in injury, environmental damage, or significant asset loss — including emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, burner management, and process safety.

Redundant Control Architectures

Redundant control systems use two or more controllers operating in parallel — one active, one in hot standby — so that if the primary CPU fails, the standby takes over in milliseconds with zero process interruption. This architecture is essential for continuous processes where unplanned downtime carries significant cost or safety risk.

We build redundant PACSystems panels using the RX3i CPE330 in dual-CPU hot-standby configurations, with redundant I/O backplanes, redundant power supplies, and redundant network paths — all housed in a single UL 508A certified enclosure.
